Abstract

The subject of this article is the issue of reading culture, and particularly its meaning for functioning of an individual and society. It is defined as an integral combination of preferences, interests, habits, knowledge and reading skills. It enables an individual to be in contact with a written word in the most beneficial way for development of their personality and creative functioning in society. The author also describes the process of shaping the key language skills such as reading, writing and speaking as well as the phenomenon of reading initiation. In the final part the author submits a draft of an educational campaign for developing reading culture in the local community.
